Merry Christmas and happy holidays everyone!! I hope you all are having a wonderful holiday and that most have some time off from school or work to enjoy a little rest. Well I’m about to get called out this Christmas but I feel like I’ve been pretty terrible about reading and blogging this year. Between starting a new job, a new relationship, and a new degree program I did not read and write nearly as much as I had planned to. It’ll be interesting to see how things went this year but I know that things aren’t looking too good fam. I spotted this adorable tag on Paper Fury, and the tag was originally created by Jenniely. Definitely check both of those blogs out and drop some Christmas spirit on them!
RECEIVED AN ARC AND NOT REVIEWED IT
Super guilty, like, it’s not even funny how guilty I am of this. I have even received a few physical ARCs from some publishers that are way too kind and those will be my first priority. My reading fell off severely since summer due to a lot of personal factors: brand new full-time job, brand new relationship, and starting grad school this past fall. I’ve actually been a little sad with how my reading has slowed down.
HAVE LESS THAN 60% FEEDBACK RATING ON NETGALLEY
Forgive me NetGalley but I have been a very bad girl this year. My feedback ratio is not looking so good, and I’m slowing down requesting titles until I can catch up on my backlog. I think my New Years reading resolution next year is to raise my percentage and make at least half of the books I read next year backlogged ARCs.
RATED BOOK ON GOODREADS AND PROMISED FULL REVIEW…BUT NEVER DID IT
This is almost cheating, it’s nice simply because I do not typically write promises for a full review on Goodreads. I usually update my Goodreads reviews in groups of 3-4 after they’ve been published on the blog. The books that I typically don’t review are shorter works that I intend to make part of a longer mini reviews post. The few times I’ll write “review later” are for books that I’m afraid to post my review on Goodreads due to backlash either for hating a hyped book or liking one that’s actively being attacked.
FOLDED THE PAGE OF A BOOK
I have only done this once or twice this year and it stressed me out when I did it. I am definitely firmly on the side that does not like dog earring books, I like to keep books in as close to pristine as possible.
ACCIDENTALLY SPILLED FOOD ON BOOK
ANOTHER THING I HATE MYSELF FOR. I’ve spilled a little on the occasional book, and I was devastated just last week when I guess I knocked over a can of beer in my sleep and it had soaked the back of a brand new hardcover book I had gotten in the mail earlier that day.
DNF’D A BOOK THIS YEAR
I had DNF’d a ridiculous number of books this year, I’m talking like 10+. It wasn’t that the books were bad, it was more that I lacked the time and attention to dedicate to any novels longer than 150 pages.
BOUGHT A BOOK PURELY BECAUSE IT WAS PRETTY WITH NO INTENTION TO READ IT
This isn’t a regular habit for me, but I did as a Christmas gift to myself purchase Penguin’s Vintage Dystopia Classics collection. They are just so BEAUTIFUL and dystopia is my favorite genre! In the collection are 1984 by George Orwell, The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. I have previously read the first two, and I plan to do a re-read of The Handmaid’s Tale next year before the release of the sequel, The Testaments. Though I loved 1984 when I borrowed an ebook copy of it from Kindle Prime last year, I don’t see myself re-reading it for many years if at all. Even still, I wanted to own a physical copy of the book because I loved it so much, and I couldn’t resist these editions. Just look at them!
READ INSTEAD OF DOING SOMETHING IMPORTANT
I definitely read instead of working on homework for grad school and I am unashamed of this. Reading helps to relax and refocus me though, so I see it as an important part of inspiring me to write papers.
SKIM READ A BOOK
I NEVER skim books no matter how boring. If I’m having difficulty finishing a book I just DNF it to return to later if at all.
FAILED YOUR GOODREADS GOAL
I have just a few more days to finish my last four books, but I’m confident that between the novel, two poetry collections, and graphic novel I picked up from the library that I’ll be able to finish this goal up this year.
BORROWED A BOOK AND NOT RETURNED IT TO THE LIBRARY
This one was almost naughty, I forgot to check due dates on one book and it was late by a day. I always return my books, though.
BROKE A BOOK BUYING BAN
Always nice because I never put myself on book buying bans. I know I have an issue and I am unashamed of this.
LEFT A REVIEW TOO LONG AND FORGOT THE BOOK
So far, I have one short true crime novel I’ve yet to write a review about, but as mentioned previously I’ve been saving it to read and review other books in the true crime collection.
WROTE IN A BOOK YOU WERE READING
NEVER. It’s painful just reading that!
FINISHED A BOOK BUT DIDN’T ADD IT TO GOODREADS
I update my Goodreads pretty religiously every time I start reading a book and especially once I finish. Even if it takes me time to write a review sometimes I always rate books immediately after finishing.
BORROWED A BOOK AND NOT RETURNED IT TO A FRIEND
…For now. I pretty much never borrow or loan out books, but my friend Dustin asked to do a little book exchange. I loaned him a beautiful hardcover copy of The Rape of Nanking by Iris Chang, and he loaned me The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins and later Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. Since then my reading slowed down for the reasons I mentioned previously, so I never got around to reading these books. I don’t think my friend has finished reading Nanking yet, either. I need to get back into contact with him soon to see about switching back haha.
My boss also, upon finding out that I’m a reader and majored in history for my undergrad, loaned me one of her favorite history books: Lincoln’s Men: The President and His Private Secretaries by Daniel Mark Epstein. Since she’s a weeb I loaned her the first omnibus for Fushigi Yûgi. I need to make a mental note to ask her if she needs the second volume, and to read her book ASAP, it’s been a while since I’ve read any non-fiction history so I’m kind of excited to get back into it.
DODGED SOMEONE ASKING IF THEY CAN BORROW A BOOK
I pretty much have to force books on most people, and am rarely asked to borrow a book.
BROKE THE SPINE OF SOMEONE ELSE’S BOOK
I have not done this, not even library books! I’m quite pleased about this.
TOOK THE JACKET OFF A BOOK TO PROTECT IT AND ENDED UP MAKING IT MORE DAMAGED
One of my nice textbooks that I was referencing for a class and, after reading a few chapters, thought it would be nice to actually read it. I took the jacket off for ease of reading, ended up bending the jacket when an item was placed on it. Then later this book was a casualty of the beer spilling incident. Suffice to say, removing the jacket was a bad idea.
SAT ON A BOOK ACCIDENTALLY
I… I have. Though it doesn’t help also that I don’t actually have a desk, so I tend to always have books stacked on my bed and I’ve definitely rolled over a few in my sleep.
SO AM I NAUGHTY OR NICE?
I ended up with a perfect 10/10 split! I actually I did better than expected!
My tags are of course for any of you that is reading this and you would like to do this tag for your own blog! Consider yourself tagged!
